CINE 455-01: SCREENWRITING II
3 UNITS

Prerequisite: CINE 354 or CINE 355 or instructor consent. Note: This course does NOT require acceptance to the Advanced Production Pool, but you still must apply.

Course Description: Advanced practice in conceptualizing and writing feature screenplays.


CINE 510-01: FILM DIRECTING
3 UNITS

Course Description: Function of the director, manipulation of space and time, problems of continuity, script planning and blocking, handling actors and crew. Scene creation and practice in the Sound Stage.


CINE 519-01: SOUND STAGE WORKSHOP

Course Description: An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage. Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights. Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production in the Sound Stage. Note: Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage outside of the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.


CINE 520-01: PROJECTS: POST-PRODUCTION SOUND (PENDING FUNDING)

Requirements: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready for sound work (it can be your own project or another student’s). The picture editing must be completed by the start of the semester. A Firewire drive will be necessary for working on your project. Basic sound collecting skills with SFSU recorders and microphones will be helpful. You should also have access to the separate elements of any existing sound you want to preserve or improve.


CINE 522-01: PROJECTS IN FILM EDITING (PENDING FUNDING)
3 UNITS

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s). Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester.
Course Description: Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing. Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software. Familiarity with Mac OS X is required. A Firewire external drive will be necessary. In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects. Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.


CINE 524-01: DIGITAL SOUND FOR FILM (LECTURE)

Course Description: While this class will still be primarily a lecture class, the curriculum is designed to give students an understanding of digital sound in terms of production, post-production, and mixing. We will explore concepts in sound design, with representative examples from documentary, experimental, and feature films. Students will be prepared to understand the elements of a film sound track and will be introduced to sound design as an essential filmmaking tool.

CINE 526-01: OPTICAL PRINTING

Course Description: The lectures, screenings, readings and technical instruction for the course are designed to foster creativity in the production of motion picture images. We will maintain an ongoing discussion of the concepts and ideas in each project as we work with experimental film production techniques. Our practice will begin with a focus on optical printing and move on to incorporate additional hands-on techniques such as hand processing and physical manipulation of the film. We will make individual and/or 2-person film projects as well as work in some large group activities.


CINE 527-01: DOCUMENTARY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE & HEALTH (PART II)

Course Description: This is a collaborative class between Cinema and Public Health in which students will research the role of social and economic conditions as a cause of disease and disability, learn to use the medium of Cinema to participate in public dialogue, and examine how documentary can be used as a community-building tool. Students will complete pre-production, production, and post-production on a social issue documentary.

CINE 555-01: WRITING & PERFORMING IN FILM & THEATRE

Note: Preference is given to students who have completed a prior screenwriting (or playwriting) course, such as CINE 354, CINE 355, or CINE 455. However, any member of the Advanced Production Pool may apply.

Course Description: This course is a workshop designed to develop your skills as a writer and director of narrative work. We will evaluate and critique your writing through in-class performance of the work.


CINE 622-01: ADVANCED FILM PRODUCTION II

CINE 630-01: WORKSHOP IN EXPERIMENTAL DOCUMENTARY

Course Description: This film workshop is a combination of experimentation and individual creative projects. This is an advanced workshop – not an equipment based class. As such, students may shoot in ANY CELLULOID FORMAT (stills, 16mm, 35mm, 8mm, etc) and finish on film OR digital. Students are expected to have a basic familiarity with film equipment.


CINE 655-01: PROJECTS IN FILM WRITING
