The applications for the Fall 2012 Advanced Courses in Screenwriting and Production are now available. You may link to these below.


DEADLINE TO APPLY: Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 5:00 pm.
If the application asks for transcripts or supporting materials, you must put a copy in the mailbox of the instructor in the Cinema Department office (FA 245) by this same deadline (Note: The Cinema Department office closes at 4:00 pm on Wednesdays).

ADVANCED SCREENWRITING CLASSES


CINE 556-01: FEATURE SCREENWRITING II
(formerly CINE 455: Screenwriting II)

Note: This course does not require acceptance to the Advanced Production Pool, but you still must apply.
Course Description: Advanced practice in conceptualizing and writing feature screenplays.


CINE 656-01: SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP (formerly CINE 655: Projects in Film Writing)

CINE 423: DIGITAL FILMMAKING (DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP)

Course Description: Introductory documentary production class exposes students to different non-fiction filmmaking techniques in the service of advancing social progress. Emphasis on new media distribution and storytelling strategies for the deployment and impact of socially-conscious documentaries. Hands on support of the Bay Area Video Coalition's efforts to build awareness and action around social justice issues.


CINE 442-01: PRODUCING AND FINANCING FILMS I
3 UNITS

Course Description: Principles and practice of narrative film producing. Economics of production, budgeting, breakdowns, financing and contracts, distribution and exhibition, censorship, copyright, libel and slander, law of privacy, releases. Class will incorporate field trips, guest speakers, and production of a group film project.
Note: This course requires a two-semester commitment: CINE 442 (development, pre-production, production) in the fall semester and CINE 542 (post-production, marketing, distribution) in the spring semester.


CINE 510-01: FILM DIRECTING

Course Description: Function of the director, manipulation of space and time, problems of continuity, script planning and blocking, handling actors and crew. Scene creation and practice in the Sound Stage.


CINE 512-01: SOUND FOR FILM PRODUCTION

Course Description: Intensive laboratory in skills and aesthetics of field and studio recording. Design and production for sound effects, narration, and Foley. Preparation of sound tracks and creative manipulation of sound across film genres.

Course Content: Microphones and recorders for sync sound and sound effects recording. Professional procedures and creative techniques of recording for film, video and multimedia. Creative and technical features of the sound studios. Group and individual exercises.



CINE 519-01: SOUND STAGE WORKSHOP
1 UNIT

Course Description: An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage facility. Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights. Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production within such a facility.
Note: Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage beyond the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.


CINE 520-01: PROJECTS IN POST-PRODUCTION SOUND
3 UNITS

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s). Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester.
Course Description: Preparation and editing of multiple sound tracks. Recording and mixing of sound tracks for picture using file-based technologies.


CINE 522-01: PROJECTS IN FILM EDITING
3 UNITS

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s). Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester.
Course Description: Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing. Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software. Familiarity with Mac OS X is required. A Firewire external drive will be necessary. In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects. Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.


CINE 524-01: DIGITAL SOUND FOR FILM (LECTURE)
3 UNITS

Course Description: While this class will still be primarily a lecture class, the curriculum is designed to give students an understanding of digital sound in terms of production, post-production, and mixing. We will explore concepts in sound design, with representative examples from documentary, experimental, and feature films. Students will be prepared to understand the elements of a film sound track and will be introduced to sound design as an essential filmmaking tool.

CINE 527-01: DOCUMENTARY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE & HEALTH

Course Description: This is a collaborative class between Cinema and Public Health in which students will research the role of social and economic conditions as a cause of disease and disability, learn to use the medium of Cinema to participate in public dialogue, and examine how documentary can be used as a community-building tool. Students will complete pre-production, production, and post-production on a social issue documentary.

Course Description: Introduction to 2D digital practices in narrative, documentary, and experimental animation. Hands-on animated projects that explore animation vocabulary, film structure, and theory.


CINE 620-01: ADVANCED FILM PRODUCTION I

Course Description: This intensive sequence enables students to write, direct, and edit a sync-sound thesis film project shot on 16mm film or high definition (HD) video, edited in Final Cut Pro, and mastered on DVD.
Note: This course requires a two-semester commitment: CINE 620 (pre-production, production) in the fall semester and CINE 622 (post-production) in the spring semester. Must be taken concurrently with CINE 624.


CINE 624-01: ADVANCED PRODUCTION CRAFTS

CINE 630: WORKSHOP IN EXPERIMENTAL DOCUMENTARY
3 UNITS

Course Description: This film workshop is a combination of experimentation and individual creative projects. This is an advanced workshop – not an equipment based class. As such, students may shoot in ANY CELLULOID FORMAT (stills, 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, etc.) and finish on film OR digital. Students are expected to have a basic familiarity with film equipment.
