The applications for the Summer / Fall 2011 Advanced Production classes are now online. You may link to these below. Please note: You MUST submit the Choice Form if you are applying to fall classes.

Deadline to Apply: Wednesday, April 27, 2011, 5:00 pm.

If the application asks for transcripts or supporting materials, you MUST put a copy in the mailbox of the instructor in the Cinema Department office (FA 245) by the application deadline (Note: The Cinema Department office closes at 4:00 pm on April 27).

Eligibility

You must be admitted to the Advanced Production Pool in order to apply -- with one exception: You are eligible to apply to the advanced screenwriting class, CINE 455, if you meet the prerequisites (see course descriptions for details).

CINE 515-01: NARRATIVE DIRECTING (SUMMER R3)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class will be structured as an intensive workshop in narrative film directing with a heavy emphasis on in-class participation. We will focus on (1) directing actors, especially for character-driven work, and (2) directorial styles and authorship. Students will be expected to prepare work outside of class to present for critique. While the session will not culminate in a major film project, students should finish the class with the skills and confidence to prepare scenes, cast, rehearse, and direct on-set.

Course Description: Advanced practice in conceptualizing and writing feature screenplays.


CINE 466-01: ANIMATION III (Note: Animation I & II are not prerequisites)

CINE 510-01: FILM DIRECTING

Course Description: Function of the director, manipulation of space and time, problems of continuity, script planning and blocking, handling actors and crew. Scene creation and practice in the Sound Stage.


CINE 519-01: SOUND STAGE WORKSHOP

Course Description: An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage facility. Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights. Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production within such a facility.
Note: Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage outside of the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.


CINE 522-01: PROJECTS IN FILM EDITING
3 UNITS

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s). Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester.
Course Description: Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing. Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software. Familiarity with Mac OS X is required. A Firewire external drive will be necessary. In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects. Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.


CINE 524-01: DIGITAL SOUND FOR FILM (LECTURE)
3 UNITS

Course Description: While this class will still be primarily a lecture class, the curriculum is designed to give students an understanding of digital sound in terms of production, post-production, and mixing. We will explore concepts in sound design, with representative examples from documentary, experimental, and feature films. Students will be prepared to understand the elements of a film sound track and will be introduced to sound design as an essential filmmaking tool.


CINE 525-01: CINEMATOGRAPHY & LIGHTING (16MM)

CINE 527-01: DOCUMENTARY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE & HEALTH

Course Description: This is a collaborative class between Cinema and Public Health in which students will research the role of social and economic conditions as a cause of disease and disability, learn to use the medium of Cinema to participate in public dialogue, and examine how documentary can be used as a community-building tool. Students will complete pre-production, production, and post-production on a social issue documentary.

FOCUS: For 2011-2012, CINE/HED 527 is being offered only as a 2-semester class with a special focus on youth sexuality and reproductive justice. Each student team will research and create a 15-minute documentary that explores the relationship between sexuality, pregnancy, family expectations, peer norms, and educational outcomes from a variety of perspectives.


CINE 620-01: ADVANCED FILM PRODUCTION I
3 UNITS
INSTRUCTOR: S. BOSWELL

Course Description: This intensive sequence enables students to write, direct, and edit a sync-sound thesis film project shot on 16mm film or high definition (HD) video, edited in Final Cut Pro, and mastered on DVD. This course requires a two-semester commitment: CINE 620 (pre-production, production) in the fall semester and CINE 622 (post-production) in the spring semester.


CINE 630-01: WORKSHOP IN EXPERIMENTAL DOCUMENTARY
3 UNITS
INSTRUCTOR: G. SNIDER

Course Description: This film workshop is a combination of experimentation and individual creative projects. This is an advanced workshop – not an equipment based class. As such, students may shoot in ANY CELLULOID FORMAT (stills, 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, etc.) and finish on film OR digital. Students are expected to have a basic familiarity with film equipment.
