ADVANCED SCREENWRITING COURSES - SPRING 2013
Advanced Screenwriting courses do not require admittance to the Advanced Production Pool, but these courses do have pre-requisites; see descriptions below for details.

CINE 556-01: FEATURE SCREENWRITING II

Note: This course does not require acceptance to the Advanced Production Pool, but you still must apply.
Course Description: Advanced practice in conceptualizing and writing feature screenplays.


CINE 654-01: WRITING & PERFORMING IN FILM & THEATRE

Course Description:  This course is a workshop designed to develop your skills as a writer and director of narrative work.  We will evaluate and critique your writing through in-class performance of the work.


CINE 656-01: SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP

Course Description:  Advanced projects in film writing. Writing of long format (feature) screenplay, analysis and evaluation of works in progress.  May be repeated for a total of 6 units.

CINE 430: DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING WORKSHOP

Course Description:  This introductory documentary production class exposes students to a variety of non-fiction filmmaking techniques in the service of advancing social progress.  Emphasis on new media distribution and storytelling strategies for the deployment and impact of socially conscious documentaries.

Course Description:  Function of the director, manipulation of space and time, problems of continuity, script planning and blocking, handling actors and crew.  Scene creation and practice in the Sound Stage.


CINE 512-01: SOUND FOR FILM PRODUCTION

Course Description: Equipment and practices for sync-sound and sound effects recording. Professional procedures and creative techniques of recording for film, video, and multimedia. Creative and technical features of the sound studios. Group and individual exercises.


CINE 515-01: NARRATIVE DIRECTING

Course Description:  This class is structured as a workshop in narrative film directing with a heavy emphasis on in-class participation.  We will focus on directing actors, especially for character-driven work, and directorial styles and authorship.


CINE 519-01: SOUND STAGE WORKSHOP

Course Description:  An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage facility.  Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights.  Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production within such a facility. 
Note:  Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage after the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.


CINE 522-01: PROJECTS IN FILM EDITING
3 UNITS

Requirement:  To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s).  Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester. 
Course Description:  Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing.  Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software.  Familiarity with Mac OS X is required.  A Firewire external drive will be necessary.  In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects.  Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.


CINE 525-01: CINEMATOGRAPHY & LIGHTING (16MM)

CINE 527-01: DOCUMENTARY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE & HEALTH

Course Description:  This is a collaborative class between Cinema and Public Health in which students will research the role of social and economic conditions as a cause of disease and disability, learn to use the medium of Cinema to participate in public dialogue, and examine how documentary can be used as a community-building tool. Students will complete pre-production, production, and post-production on a social issue documentary.

                                          
CINE 529-01: EXPERIMENTAL FILMMAKING
3 UNITS

Course Description: The lectures, screenings, readings, and technical instruction for the course are designed to foster creativity in the production of motion picture images. We will maintain an ongoing discussion of the concepts and ideas in each project as we work with experimental film production techniques. Our practice will begin with a focus on optical printing and move on to incorporate additional hands-on techniques such as hand processing and physical manipulation of the film. We will make individual and/or 2-person film projects as well as work in some large group activities.

CINE 623-01: EXPLORATION OF CINEMA AS AN ONLINE MEDIUM

CINE 630-01: WORKSHOP IN EXPERIMENTAL DOCUMENTARY

Course Description: This film workshop is a combination of experimentation and individual creative projects.  This is an advanced workshop – not an equipment based class.  As such, students may shoot in ANY CELLULOID FORMAT (stills, 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, etc.) and finish on film OR digital.  Students are expected to have a basic familiarity with film equipment.


CINE 651-01: EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION
